On May 4, 2018, The Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction (hereinafter – the Center) conducted the online meeting with MapAction, a leading British NGO in the field of mapping and formation of databases.
During the meeting the parties discussed the joint work plan for the creation of a data bank, building technical capacity of the staff of the Center and the competent authorities in the field of prevention and elimination of natural and technogenic emergency situations in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic.
Also, the Center and MapAction defined the main directions of joint activities, identified priorities and developed incremental steps in a work plan regarding:
- Establishment of mapping data bank using public data sources used by the United Nations agencies;
- Teaching the Center staff, operational staff of the authorized bodies of the member states of the Center, international and non-governmental organizations stationed in the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Kyrgyz Republic and how to use modern and innovative mapping software.
The parties agreed to hold a work meeting in July of this year in Almaty with the participation of specialists of the member states, the Center staff, and MapAction.
In conclusion, Director of the Center assured MapAction leadership in providing comprehensive assistance in data collection.
Under certain conditions, this work will allow operational services timely and qualitatively assess the situation of natural and man-made disasters, to take appropriate decisions on the dispatch of forces and means, as well as eliminate disinformation management staff.
