UNESCAP: main areas of cooperation


On January 30, 2020, the Center hosted a working meeting of the Director of the Center for Emergencies and Disaster Risk Reduction, Mr. Ukashev Dzhergalbek with the Director of ICT and Disaster Risk Reduction Division of UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) for North and Central Asia, Ms. Tiziana Bonapace.

During the working meeting, Mr. Ukashev briefed Ms. Bonapace on the main tasks for 2020 and the results of activities to strengthen the Center’s potential. Ms. Bonapace expresses gratitude to  the Center for the progress in implementation of the memorandum of understanding .

She highlighted the points and the potential of continuous cooperation between ESCAP and the Center.

At the same time, she highlighted  the main directions of further cooperation in the field of disaster risk reduction  in the area of improvement of  the potential of developing countries in Central Asia for the effective use of space applications for monitoring and early warning of droughts through the Regional Drought Mechanism.

Ms Bonapace also noted on  the potential of renewing partnerships  in promoting the implementation of the initiative of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway in Central Asia, including though opportunities of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The other area that requires renewed attention is on strengthening  cooperation with the ESCAP office in Tehran on the implementation of a project to combat sand and dust storms.

Mr. Ukashev emphasized the relevance of the themes under discussion, taking into account the priorities  given by the Center’s management to issues of strengthening cooperation with ESCAP in the field of disaster risk reduction.
