The Center and GIZ carried out a field trip to the upper reaches of the Ulken River basin in Almaty

On September 19, 2023, within the framework of the joint project of the Center and GIZ “Strengthening the capacity for the safe management of transboundary water resources in Central Asia through the use of innovative information and communication technologies,” a field trip was made to the upper reaches of the Ulken Almaty river basin in the territory of the Ile-Alatau National Park, during which employees of GIZ and the Center visited the Almaty department of the State Institution “Kazselezaschita” of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as gauging stations at the Ayusai dam, at the mouth of Kumbel and on Big Almaty Lake.

Deputy Head of the State Institution “Kazselezashchita” Mr. M. Kasenov demonstrated to the GIZ team an automated system for monitoring mudflow hazards in the city of Almaty, the system interface, monitoring parameters and its interface with the city’s public warning system.

The Center and GIZ expresses gratitude to the leadership of the Emergency Situations Department of Almaty and the State Institution “Kazselezaschita” for the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the existing mudflow hazard monitoring systems in Almaty, as well as control tools and approaches to hydrological monitoring.
