Center experts strengthened the capacity of specialists of pilot ayil aimak of Uzgen district on use of FAO Collect Earth tool for disaster risk reduction

In the period from March 15 to 17, 2021, in the Uzgen district of the Osh region of the Kyrgyz Republic, within the framework of the UN Food and Agricultural Organization project "Strengthening capacity for disaster risk reduction and disaster preparedness in the agricultural sectors of the Kyrgyz Republic", the experts of the Center conducted training on the use of the FAO Collect Earth tool on mapping geological hazards affecting agriculture.

This training was attended by specialists from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Uzgen district and by specialists of Don-Bulak and Salam-Alik Aiyl aimaks.

In preparation for the training, UN FAO trained GIS specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations on the use of the FAO Collect Earth tool, as well as provided technical assistance in the development of cartographic materials on hazardous natural processes, climate data and land use data in Uzgen region, using the Collect Earth tool.

The practical exercises of the training sessions were practiced on computers specially purchased by FAO for these purposes with the appropriate technical characteristics for working with maps. Upon completion of the training, representatives of the pilot Aiyl aimaks were provided with one computer with installed software “Collect Earth” and cartographic materials developed within the framework of the project.

This training will allow specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic for the Uzgen District and specialists of the Don-Bulak and Salam-Alik Aiyl Aimaks to work with maps and cartographic material prepared within the framework of the project, which will increase the efficiency of work in mapping natural hazards and providing primary information to the relevant authorities, as well as timely response to emergencies.
