Appropriate disaster risk governance – the imperative of time

The Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction jointly with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction on 13th of October 2020 conducted the Consultative meeting devoted to the International Day for disaster risk reduction.

The representatives of the regional and national offices of UN Missions, World Bank, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Federation, CAIAG, the Secretary of National Platform for disaster risk reduction in Kyrgyz Republic and finalists of the creative competition dedicated to “International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction” participated in this event.

The Consultative meeting started with acquaintance with the UN Secretary-General’s statement on the International Day for disaster risk reduction.   

During the meeting, the following issues have been discussed:

  • Report on the Center’s activities in the field of DRR, including COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and planned for 2021 year activities;
  • Sharing knowledge and experience of efficient disaster risk management, including COVID-19 pandemic in Central Asia Region in 2020;
  • Report on scheduled activities in the field of DRR, including COVID-19 pandemic in Central Asia region in 2021.

During the discussion it was mentioned, that this year the International Day for disaster risk reduction is dedicated to the governance issues. In this regard, the activities of international organizations supporting the Emergency authorities of Central Asian countries with development of strategies is very important and should take into account not only separate natural hazards, but also strategies, which allow responding on system risks, triggered by zoonotic diseases, climate shocks and environment devastation.

Participants of the meeting received information about planned and conducted activities of international organizations in the field of DRR, including the plans with COVID-19 pandemic response in Central Asian region in 2021.

Additionally, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction presented the results of the creative competition devoted to “International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction”.

In conclusion, the participants noted the importance of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction in raising of public awareness regarding the importance of reducing economic losses from natural disasters.
