The Center and UNICEF conducted an introductory workshop on developing a climate and environmental risk index for children in the Republic of Kazakhstan
On March 6, 2025, in Astana, the Center jointly with the United Nations Children's Fund in Kazakhstan (UNICEF) held an introductory workshop on the development of the Climate and Environmental Risk Index for children in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Risk Index is created within the framework of the joint project of the Center and UNICEF “Enhancing interagency cooperation between the sectors of emergency situations, health, education, social protection, ecology, water resources, internal affairs on the development of the Climate and Environmental Risk Index for children, improving child safety and procurement of humanitarian emergency kits”.
For reference: The Republic of Kazakhstan has been selected as a pilot country for the implementation of the Climate Risk Index for Children based on the CCRI-DRM model in 2025. The CCRI-DRM model has been tested in six countries (Cambodia, Somalia, Kenya, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda) at the initial stage in 2022-2023. Tajikistan and Turkmenistan joined this work in 2024.
The event was attended by members of the newly established Technical Working Group (TWG) for the development of the Climate and Environmental Risk Index for Children, including representatives of eight interested government agencies.
The Center's experts presented to the TWG the project goals and objectives, expected results, as well as key products planned to be developed for interested organizations.
Based on the results of the workshop, the TWG adopted the following decisions:
▪ To review the list of indicators of the Climate and Environmental Risks for Children Index proposed by the Center and send its comments and suggestions in the working order.
▪ Identify the list of data sources at the national and local levels and assess their availability for the development of the Index.
The implementation of the global model adapted by the Center and UNICEF in the Republic of Kazakhstan is aimed at strengthening cooperation among stakeholders, raising awareness and improving mechanisms for managing risks faced by children, youth and families in the context of climatic, environmental and other disasters, shocks and stresses.
