The Center continues to implement the FAO project "Institutionalization and digitalization of the Damage and Loss Assessment Methodology for the agricultural sector in Kazakhstan"

In Astana from September 17 to 20, 2024, a Center’s delegation, led by Deputy Director Mr. Meimanbek Chekirebaev with representatives of the FAO Regional office for Central Asia and Europe, who visited Astana as part of their mission within the FAO projects being implemented in Kazakhstan has conducted a series of meetings related to the FAO project "Institutionalization and digitalization of the damage and loss assessment Methodology for the agricultural sector in Kazakhstan."

On September 17, the Center's representatives held a working meeting with FAO Regional Office representatives—Ms. Daniela Mangione (programme officer) and Mr. George Kvinikadze (consultant on agricultural census and SDG/statistics) to discuss the current status of the joint project and the agenda for the upcoming meeting of the Interagency Working Group (IWG) and trilateral meetings with representatives of relevant government agencies of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On September 18, the Center, together with the FAO office in Kazakhstan, held regular meeting of the IWG focused on the institutionalization and digitalization of the damage and loss assessment methodology for the agricultural sector in Kazakhstan. During the event, the Center's senior expert, Bakhtiyar Ospanov presented to the IWG members a Unified Methodology for assessing potential losses and damage from disasters in the agricultural sector of the Republic of Kazakhstan, taking into account all previously provided comments and suggestions. IWG members provided additional proposals for improving the project, specifically regarding the mechanism for collecting statistical and other data.

On the same day, representatives of the Center and FAO held a trilateral meeting with representatives of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan, led by Vice Minister General-Major Yerlan Nurpeisov, where they discussed the current results of the project being implemented by the Center with financial support from of FAO. The Vice Minister confirmed readiness to provide comprehensive support for the implementation of the Center/FAO project.

On September 19, the Center and FAO conducted a series of trilateral meetings with representatives from the Departments of Livestock and Crop Production of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan, the Committee of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Ecology, Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, and the Committee of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan. During these working meetings, additional comments on improving the Unified Methodology were also received.

As a result of the meetings, project experts from the CESDRR/FAO received the necessary comments and began adjusting the Unified Methodology. Overall, the project aims to develop a comprehensive tool for assessing potential losses and damage in sectors such as crop production, livestock, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture. This tool will be beneficial for national policy and planning, as well as for implementing international programs aimed at sustainable development through 2030, including initiatives such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and other important international commitments.
