The Center plans to strengthen cooperation with the UNECE to reduce the risk of industrial accidents in Central Asia

The Director of the Center participated in the 12th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents, held from 29 November to 1 December 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland. The Center and UNECE agreed to strengthen cooperation in reducing the risks of technological and industrial accidents in Central Asian region within the framework of the Regional Forum - Meeting of the Heads of Emergency Agencies of Central Asian Countries.

Taking into account:

  • Exposure of the region to almost all types of natural and man-made disasters, including industrial and Natech-accident risks;
  • risks of large-scale and transboundary emergencies, the consequences of which cannot always be eliminated by the forces and means of one country alone,

The Center and UNECE, within the framework of the Roadmap for the implementation of the Strategy for the Development of Cooperation in Central Asian сountries in DRR 2023-2024, plan to join efforts in the implementation of the following activities:

  • Integration of risks of technological and industrial disasters into DRR policies, plans and programs;
  • Development of a joint action plan between riparian countries with harmonized standard operating procedures for accident notification, response and mutual assistance in the Syr Darya basin;
  • Development of a concept and introduction of a systemic approach for transboundary disaster risk management, taking into account climate change;
  • Development of a Regional Digital Catalogue of Potentially dangerous objects of Central Asian countries Presenting a Threat of Transboundary Emergencies;
  • Implementation of activities to establish a regional early warning system on emergencies through partnerships between government, the private sector and other stakeholders;
