The Center strengthens cooperation with GIZ
On January 19, 2024, within the series of meetings of the delegation of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (The German federal enterprise for international cooperation) with regional partners, the Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction was visited by Mr. Joachim Fritz - GIZ Country Director Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Mr. Torsten Brezina – GIZ Cluster Coordinator climate, water, energy in Central Asia.
During the visit, GIZ representatives got acquainted with the resource and technical potential, history of the Center's establishment and activities, as well as planned activities in the Central Asian region.
Mr. Serik Aubakirov, Director of the Center, expressed gratitude to GIZ for support in holding the Regional Forum - Meeting of Heads of Emergency Authorities of the Central Asia countries in 2023, and also confirmed the Center's readiness for successful implementation of the joint two-year project on creation of a transboundary early warning system on hydrological hazards.
In turn, Mr. Joachim Fritz thanked the Center for its work in the field of climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Central Asia, and highly appreciated the achievements of the Center in strengthening regional cooperation and building a constructive dialogue to discuss the situation in the region and identify key issues and challenges. In his speech, Mr. Brezina noted the relevance and importance of the expansion of the Center's member countries and expressed his intention to strengthen further cooperation between GIZ and the Center in disaster risk reduction in Central Asia.
During the meeting, the Center presented several project ideas for consideration by Mr. Fritz and Mr. Brezina, including the establishment of a Regional Early Warning System, a Regional Atlas of Transboundary Hazards, and a Regional Coordination Center for Emergency Response in Central Asia to coordinate and provide technical support to humanitarian operations at the CESDRR base in Almaty.
