The Center took part in the final seminar on the results of the Regional Study «On resilient and low carbon cities of Central Asia»
During the period from September 27 to 28, 2023, the delegation of the Center, consisting of Director Aubakirov S. and senior expert Yesniyazova Z. took part in a high-level event on the results of the Regional Study “On Resilient and Low-Carbon Cities of Central Asia”, organized by the World Bank, the Global Fund for Disaster Risk Reduction and Recovery's Cities Resilience Program, and the Urban Forum Kazakhstan Community Foundation.
The event was attended by leaders and representatives of emergency departments, government agencies, experts, practitioners and development partners involved in urban development, climate change mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
Workshop participants were presented with a year-long study that used quantitative, qualitative and spatial analysis to develop evidence-based recommendations and evaluate policy options for developing sustainable and low-carbon cities.
During the seminar, the Director of the Center, Mr. Aubakirov S. in his welcoming speech, he noted the role of the Center in interaction with partners on the issues of sustainable development of the urban environment and disaster risk management in the region within the framework of the Central Asian Initiative and the “Increasing Cities Resilience by 2030” (MCR2030) initiative.
In his welcoming speech, the Chairman of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Colonel-General of Police Nazarzoda R.U. thanked representatives of the World Bank for the work carried out in Tajikistan, and spoke about the aspects and approaches used for urban development and mitigating the impact of change climate.
The relevance of the work being carried out and the importance of sharing experience were noted in their welcoming speech by the Deputy Head of the Foreign Ministry Representative in Almaty Islambek Raimov, Deputy Akim of the Almaty Region Almas Botanov, and World Bank Resident Representative Andrey Mikhnev.
Group discussions and sessions held during the workshop allowed for the exchange of knowledge on aspects of the state of urban development and the promotion of innovative approaches for climate mitigation at the regional and national levels.
A number of bilateral meetings were held on the sidelines of this event.
Thus, a meeting was held with representatives of the World Bank, head of practice of the World Bank office in Austria, Christoph Pusch, senior specialist in urban development and disaster risk management Chi-Yun-Huang, representative of the World Bank in Kyrgyzstan Tolkyn Dzhukusheva, operational consultant Madina Nizamitdin and director Center by Aubakirov S.
Representatives of the World Bank gave a positive assessment of the Center’s role in interaction with partners in the field of DRR and adaptation to climate change in the Central Asian region and discussed further steps towards cooperation.
On September 28, a meeting was held with representatives of UNDRR with the National coordinator in Kazakhstan Bekmagambetova Samal and the National coordinator in Tajikistan Kodirov Dilshod on the issues of holding a meeting of the Working Group of Experts of the Regional Forum-Meeting of Heads of Emergency Authorities of Central Asian Countries and the Forum itself.
