The Center was visited by participants of the 14th Central Asian environmental leadership programme for sustainable development

On September 12, 2024, within the framework of the Memorandum of Cooperation and Interaction between the Center and the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC), the Center's project with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) "Strengthening the Capacity for Safe Management of Transboundary Water Resources in Central Asia through the Application of Innovative Information and Communication Technologies", the Center was visited by participants of the 14th Central Asian Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (CALP) "Glacial Horizons and Climate Sensitive Mountains Disaster Risk Management in Central Asia".

CALP is a flagship program of CAREC, implemented since 2010 and aimed at enhancing the leadership potential of young executives and mid-level managers of various environmental agencies, focused on solving numerous problems of sustainable development in the Central Asian region, and dedicated to discussing one of the most pressing and important topics of our time - climate change, disaster risk management and sustainable development in mountainous areas.

The Centre is currently implementing a two-year project with GIZ to create a transboundary early warning system for hydrological hazards, as well as a number of other projects with leading international organisations aimed at disaster risk management and sustainable urban development. In this regard, GIZ and CAREC initiated familiarisation of the CALP participants with the work of the Center.

Following the meeting, the CAPL participants expressed interest in the work of the Center and noted the coordinating role of the Center in the Central Asian region.

In addition, within the framework of the project with GIZ, a field trip was made to the upper reaches of the Ulken River basin in Almaty on the territory of the Ile-Alatau National Park, during which the CAPL participants, representatives of GIZ, CAREC and the Center visited the Almaty department of the State Institution "Kazselezashchita" of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as hydroposts on the Ayusay dam, at the mouth of the Kumbel, and on the Big Almaty Lake. Representatives of the State Institution "Kazselezashchita" of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Kazakhstan demonstrated the automated mudflow hazard monitoring system of the city of Almaty, the system interface, monitoring parameters and its interfacing with the city's population warning system.

The CAPL participants emphasized the importance of the work of the State Institution "Kazselezashchita" for the safety of the city's population.
